Ride With Me is my first-ever Formula 1 romance, a love story set in the high-stakes world of open-wheel single-seater auto-racing. I know next to nothing about it, of course, aside from the cars go fast – but I was still excited to give this book a go when my friends at Macmillan Australia sent me a copy for review.
The leading man, Thomas, is “the most hated man in motorsport” after a video of him wishing death on a fellow racer (who went on to become paralysed in a horror on-track smash) went viral. He’s hoping that a family friend’s bachelor party in Las Vegas will help take his mind off things.
The leading lady, Simone, is attending the bride’s bachelorette party with the same hopes. She was left at the altar two weeks ago, and subsequently had her own rant-slash-meltdown viral video moment.
Simone and Thomas, in a moment of drunken spontaneity, decide to get married themselves at one of the infamous Vegas strip chapels. In the sober light of day, they realise a quickie wedding followed by a quicker annulment will not improve their reputations one bit, so they decide to stay married for appearances’ sake.
It’s a reasonable enough set up, and Ride With Me is a perfectly serviceable marriage-of-convenience romance. The sexual tension between the characters is great, and the fulfillment of it is pleasantly spicy (but nothing that will blow your socks off). Thomas is a little too perfect, Simone shits on her ex-fiancee a little too much (why did she ever agree to marry him in the first place?), and my eyes kind of glazed over some of the racing bits, so I came out it with no more knowledge of Formula 1 than I had going in. But, as far as an introduction to Formula 1 romance goes, Ride With Me does the job.
