I don’t know what I looked at several months ago that triggered the Instagram algorithm to start putting Angas Tiernan’s Minute Cryptic videos in my feed, but I’m glad it happened. I’d always assumed I wasn’t smart enough to understand or solve cryptic crosswords, but Tiernan’s short and simple explanations convinced me I could learn. That’s what led me to pick up Minute Cryptic, his new book teaching total beginners how to solve cryptic clues – Penguin Books Australia were kind enough to send me a copy for review.
Learning to solve cryptic crossword clues is kind of like learning another language, making Minute Cryptic kind of like Duolingo for wordplay. Tiernan – with his trusty clue constructor, Liam Runnalls – has created a completely accessible guide that explains each component of a clue with plenty of examples, hand-holding, and positive reinforcement.
I’d imagine Minute Cryptic might be dull for old hands at cryptic crosswords, but if you’re new to the sport (like me) you’ll find it a very satisfying read, full of “aha!” moments. And, now that solving the clues is (somewhat) demystified, I’m even more impressed with anyone who writes the clues! I could never… unless that’s the subject of Tiernan and Runnalls’ next book.
